Rumors of a horizontally-oriented replacement made its rounds recently providing gamers a glimpse of what to expect should the tittle-tattle prove to be true.
The news, coupled with the obvious shortage of the Miyoo Mini, made it more difficult for people to get their hands on the retro handheld. Members of dedicated Miyoo Mini communities also report a significant increase in the price of the device.
In the meantime, competition has crept up as well — Anbernic, for instance, have a Miyoo clone in the works — and there’s no dearth of choice now.

1. Anbernic RG351V
The Anbernic RG351V is a solid alternative to the Miyoo Mini for those looking to get a similar gaming experience. And while the RG351V might not be as mini as the latter, both retro consoles drew inspiration from the same handheld — the Game Boy.
Like the Miyoo Mini, the Anbernic RG351V offers a vertically-oriented device. As we briefly covered above, it’s larger in size, and that added real estate gives way to better hardware.

First is a larger display. At 3.5-inches, the Anbernic RG351V allows for a better viewing angle and offers clearer pictures. Next is a larger battery rated at 3,900mAh, which obviously means longer gameplay.
Thanks to the generous space, the Anbernic RG351V also sports two TF card slots, two OTG ports, and a much-appreciated analog joystick.
The larger size also means that the Anbernic RG351V is more ergonomic. It feels a joy to hold and will not stress your hands even if you play for hours on it.
If you’ve been following RETRO91.com, we wrote an article where we compared the Miyoo Mini and the Anbernic RG280V. Here, we talked about how challenging it is to hit the Miyoo Mini’s shoulder buttons and how difficult it is to hold when playing in different positions.
You won’t experience that with the Anbernic RG351V. The length, space, and placement of the buttons are not as constrictive as the Mini. And the front-facing speaker, despite occasionally getting blocked by my palm, does not entirely muffle the sound.
Other notable features of the Anbernic RG351V include a more powerful quad-core RK3326 chip, built-in WiFi, and the ability to emulate games up to PlayStation Portable (PSP).
2. Retroid Pocket 3/Pocket 2+
Both the Retroid Pocket 2+ and Retroid Pocket 3 also make for great alternatives for the Miyoo Mini. In fact, some fans would even consider getting any of the aforementioned Retroid devices as an upgrade instead of an alternative as they both promise a superior experience compared to the Mini.
For starters, the Retroid Pocket 2+ and the Retroid Pocket 3 obviously have more to offer than Miyoo’s compact retro handheld.
Both rock a more powerful chipset in the form of the A75 and A55 combo CPU mated to a PowerVR GE8300 GPU. The former comes with a 2GB RAM while the latter can be optioned with a 3GB RAM.

Both consoles also run on the Android OS whereas the Miyoo Mini does not.
The combination of a powerful hardware and a decent software system to complement it makes both, the Retroid Pocket 2+ and the Retroid Pocket 3, befitting options for those looking to step up their game.
Other noteworthy things offered by both models include a powerful 4,000mAh battery, built-in WiFi connectivity, a large touchscreen display, the ability to run Android games, and a horizontal orientation.
You should set your expectations when planning to get either the Retroid Pocket 2+ or the Retroid Pocket 3 as they do come with a steeper sticker price. On Go Retoid’s official website, the Retroid Pocket 2+ sells for $99 while the Retroid 3 is priced at $119. Both figures do not include shipping fees.

Speaking of shipping fees, did you know you can get the Miyoo Mini for only $52.99, free of shipping? Check out this link to find out Retro91’s collaboration with Hekka where you can get the Miyoo Mini, and other retro handhelds at reasonably low prices.
3. PowKiddy RGB20S

Yet another vertically-aligned console, the PowKiddy RGB20S also makes for a great choice for when you can’t get your hands on a Miyoo Mini.

Thanks to having a similar design as the aforementioned Anbernic RG351V, the PowKiddy RGB20S offers a comparable Gameboy-ish appearance. It also has a likewise preferable ergonomic feel compared to the Miyoo Mini.
However, it does sport more buttons than Miyoo’s small retro handheld and sees the addition of a second analog joystick as well as a better-positioned front-facing speaker.
Having said that, the PowKiddy RGB20S is better at playing more PlayStation and PlayStation Portable games as it has a better control layout. In addition, the placement of the front-firing speakers ensures that the palm of your hands will not cover it.
Under the hood, PowKiddy’s RGB20S sports an RK3326 chip and a 1GB RAM. It also comes with a 3.5-inch display and a 3,500mAh battery. WiFi is supported but you will have to use an external modem. It has dual TF support and can run games from platforms. It can play Nintendo 64, PlayStation, Nintendo DS, and PlayStation Portable (PSP).
4. PowKiddy A20
Next on the list is another product from PowKiddy, the A20.
In keeping with the vertical handheld theme, the PowKiddy A20 offers a similar appearance but with a rather premium vibe. While the above mentioned RGB20S is more akin to the RG351V, the PowKiddy A20 looks like the long-lost brother of the Analogue Pocket. Overall, the A20 offers a look that’s sleek and stylish.

From the outside, the PowKiddy A20 noticeably has six face buttons A-B-C-D-X and Y. It does not have a secondary analog joystick but retains the one atop the D-pad.
The A20 also has more ports than the RGB20S. It has a micro HDMI out port for projecting to a larger monitor. It also has a down-firing speaker and is missing the L2 and R2 shoulder buttons.
At the core of the PowKiddy A20 is a more powerful chipset. It boasts a quad-core S905D3 CPU paired with a dual-core Mali-G31 MP2 GPU. It also sports a 2GB RAM and runs on Android.
As you would expect, it can run tons of games up to PlayStation Portable (PSP).
5. Anbernic RG280V

The Anbernic RG280V is probably the closest to the Miyoo Mini in more ways than one compared to the other handhelds we have on this list. Despite the Anbernic RG280V having a slight advantage over the Miyoo Mini, I’d say they’re still neck and neck.
Physical features found on the Anbernic RG280V include a Miyoo Mini-sized 2.8-inch screen, a D-pad, and four face buttons. The speaker, faces the rear.
Its chipset is a 1.2GHz dual-core JZ4770 paired with a 512MB RAM.

In fact, the Miyoo Mini is one of the most heavily supported systems I’ve seen since the Game Boy. The slew of accessories that are being designed and engineered by fans of the device make the Miyoo Mini a true gem even with its limitations.
That said, while the factories struggle to get back in supply, the above-mentioned alternatives should offer a pretty decent choice spread to choose from. While there’s no single winner, the RG280V does seem like one of the best Miyoo Mini alternatives!
